Huawei P20 Pro – London Brick Lane – Amy

Another superb day in London with Amy this Saturday in the Brick Lane area.

I set a personal task to try and shoot one or two images from each set with my phone. I got most of them but for two or three. As I was leading the group I did not have much time, just a quick assessment, a change of EV in the Pro mode and then the shot.

So here are the results. Quite amazing really from a phone. All were shot in raw and Pro mode on the Huawei P20 Pro. Image size was set for 40MP.

When shooting I mentioned to the group that one of the interior shots in the cafe was terrible, however I did mange to rescue it with a crop and Portrait Pro.

Post-production was Adobe Camera Raw with some finishing in Portrait Pro. Complex cloning such as the Angel shot was carried out in Photoshop.

Here are the images, remember – shot on a phone.

First shot of the day. Straight shot to B&W.

Third of the day (I forgot to shoot one at stop 2.
We had some gorgeous dapple lighting which we took advantage of.

A closer version although the wide lens (if you want 40MP) was not good and I should have shot further away and cropped. Some corrective distorion used.

Cafe fairy lights. Surprisingly good detail for low light.

This was the shot in the cafe I did not like. The lighting was very harsh and Amy’s forehead was too shiny for the lighting. The original without a crop did look terrible with the perspective.
Portrait pro helped, liquify as well around the cheeks and chin, plus some Hollywood finishing to help.

This was the shot from our previous day that gave me the idea to shoot with the phone.
Straight shot. Some burning.

Significant cloning. Dodging & Burning. Saturation & Curves. Perspective correction.
Replacement text.
I grabbed this over the heads of the others. Main point was to keep those bollards in areas I could clone easily.

Some burning in and a little dodging. The X in Rex was extended to emphasise Amy more because of the strong wall.

Some great fun, even though I had limited time to shoot (I was working!). I liken the process of shooting with polaroid. Have fun with the phone, don’t expect too much and use the strengths of the equipment to get the shot. Remember perspective in close is going to be different. I could have shot on a closer portrait mode with one of the other lenses but I wanted to keep in raw. Also in postproduction, even in raw, because of the small sensor size dodging shadows does bring excessive noise. Not a problem if you like high contrast images though.

Many thanks to all who came along on Saturday and Amy as well.
